UPDATE:  The bourbons will be Eagle Rare, Elijah Craig and Knob Creek. The cigar: one or more of the LaGloria Cubana cigar brands. To help those attending plan for a “sophisticated” tasting evening, here are tasting notes on each of the bourbons:

Eagle Rare – – Nose: Toffee, orange peel, herbs, honey, leather, and oak. Taste: Bold, dry, and oaky with notes of candied almonds and rich cocoa. Finish: Dry and lingering.

Elijah Craig – – Nose: Sweet, rich, burnt caramel, toffee, oak, leather, black cherry soda. Alcohol is barely noticeable. Taste: Oak, caramel, toffee, mild sweetness. Finish: Oak dominates, but caramel and toffee are still there, but are subtle. Some black pepper comes forward. An oaky dryness replaces the initial rich sweet aromas and lingers for quite a while.

Knob Creek- – Nose: Rye spices, caramel, brown sugar, cherry, cedar, vanilla; moderate alcohol. Finish: Rapidly growing capsaicin spice, oak, char & dryness build into the long finish. The capsaicin spice turns towards spicy ginger snaps later on. Moderate burn.

While the tasting notes on the bourbons are from legit “tasters,” just for grins this writer asked AI for a review of the La Gloria Cubana cigars. Depending on which cigar is offered for the evening, here’s the report:

“La Gloria Cubana cigars have a variety of flavors, including:

  • Salty, nutty, and sweet – The 8th St. cigar has a creamy, smooth mouthfeel, with a peppery finish that calms down after the first inch. It also has a floral aroma and flavors of leather and roasted coffee beans.
  • Brown sugar sweetness – The Esteli Robusto cigar has a brown sugar sweetness with a sharp earth and spice. It also has a bready mouthfeel and flavors of oak and dark chocolate.
  • Toasty and sweet – The Serie R Black Maduro cigar has a sweet and toasty aroma, with hints of coffee and leather. It also has a semi-fruity sweetness with coffee and a wave of black pepper.
  • Toastiness, red pepper, and earthiness – The Criollo de Oro Toro cigar has toastiness, red pepper, earthiness, and a sweet cedar flavor. It also has herbal flavors and a medium amount of black pepper.

“Some say that La Gloria Cubana cigars are consistent, rich, and flavorful, with a great balance. Others say that they are a good choice for new cigar smokers and are also reasonably priced.”
