Legion,
Auxiliary, SAL Officers
To Be Installed
Tuesday Night
At Monthly
Membership Meeting
This coming Tuesday night’s General
Membership meeting which starts at 7 p.m. will take on a slightly
different 'flair' than most monthly meetings, Post Commander Bob Byrd
told the Executive Committee members at their meeting this past
Tuesday.
Since the officers of the Auxiliary and SAL
as well as the Legion are all scheduled to be installed at the
General membership meeting, only those agenda items which require a
membership vote as well as the "Good of the Legion"
comment portion of the meeting will be on Tuesday night's agenda. Due
to the time needed to install officers Bob said the committee reports
that are usually part of the meeting will be set aside this time.
For those members who always ask about the
menu for the complimentary dinner served prior to the meeting, once
again it was not available at publication deadline.
July 4 Recap
Although no formal head count was taken, best
estimates suggest that between 800 and 1,000 people visited the Post
during the Independence Day celebration. The general
consensus suggests that this year was not as hectic as the
2024 celebration. That observation could be attributed to the fact
that this year July 4 occurred at the beginning of three-day
weekend. Perhaps more people were travelling this year.
The other observation was that this year was
just "too bloody hot" for folks to to
leave the house and spend an afternoon/early evening sitting outside.
But whatever the reason,, there may be some
'learning lessons' from this year that could be applied to next year
since July 4, 2026 will fall on a Saturday -
- - and it will formally be the nation's 250th Birthday.
However those who did visit the Post this year were well-entertained
by the all-volunteer Alpharetta City Band's outstanding concert on
the lawn. This year's concert suggest that a
tradition may be developing since this was the band's fourth
consecutive year playing an evening Independence Day 'gig' at the
Post. Also thanks to It's My Party Rentals
who arranged for a tent for the band on rather short notice.
In addition to a big THANK YOU to all the
members of the band who gave up their day to play
at the Post, another Thank You and shout out
needs to go to all the volunteers who stepped up at the last minute
to 'make Independence Day events happen' at the Post this year.
Parking - John Dowd took the lead at the last minute and corralled his two daughters, Abigail and Maggie,
to join him for the day. Also other
volunteers directing traffic that afternoon and early evening were
Bob Davis, Don Kumpf, Fred Mahony, Tommy Youngblood, Jim Davis, Andy
Dutton, Bill Cook and James Timcoe.
Among the challenges those who were parking
cars realized during the day were the number of drivers who
apparently got their driver's license but never really learned how to
park a car - - - and especially those who didn't know how to back into a space!
Auxiliary membership support - They seemed to be everywhere, picking
up loose ends where needed and when they were not hitting up folks in
the crowd for the 50/50 raffle. According to incoming President Ellen
Youngblood, the raffle raised $2,095 making their split $1047.50!
The lucky winner was Milo Wilbank,
a guest from Pensacola. As Ellen noted, that's "a pretty good
return on a 3-ticket purchase." The volunteers who made it
happen were Patti Fredlund, Leah Dunn, Elaine (and John) VanCamp, Kim Oliver, Terry Brown, Cheiri Lowery,
Michelle Jones, Ariel Lewis, and DiAna
Casale.
Food Service - The SAL's food service at the
baseball concession stand was very well received. They ran out of
food - - even though Derek Garmon was overheard
"complaining" that he had to make two trips to the grocery
store during the afternoon for more supplies.
Thanks to those who volunteered to help with
food service, the SAL netted approximately
$1,400 for their treasury. The volunteers (according to the list
Derek provided) included John McSween, Rick Larose, Aaron Dunn, Algie
Allen, Chris Thompson, Matt Gill, Stewart Crouncher,
Papa Joe, Carter Jarrett, Bruce Hay, Abby Dowd, and Patti Fredlund.
An Editorial
Note
Whenever a list of volunteers is pulled
together and published, you can be assured
someone's name was not included. And we're confident that this will
be true with the names listed above. So if
your name is missing, we apologize on behalf of those who pulled the
names together. Just know that the Post 201 Family members say
"Thank You" for your support.
You can rest with the knowledge that you
helped - - - and that is what's important. You said "Yes, I'll
step forward." Unfortunately, too many don't. - hdh
